about
Technology is a double-edged sword, and what you gain in precision from recording in a controlled, logical way, you sometimes lose in emotion and immediacy. I have always recorded my albums by myself in the flats where I happen to be living, so they are not exactly made in ‘studio’ conditions or with pro-quality equipment, but my aim for each of them was to get the best possible standard of production that I could.
For this record, I did the reverse, and bought a badly dented Spanish guitar for £10 in a Hastings junk-shop, and a tired-out Grundig reel to reel tape machine with dirty heads and old tape off Ebay, plugged in my mic where it stood, and hit Record.
What came out is what you hear, bounced back from the tape masters to my laptop and into the digital world. Everything was done at the same time in one take, all into one mic in my tiny studio flat, there and then, in the instant - surrounded by the reflections of sound from the hard walls and the mist of hiss and clicks, and, inevitably, all of my own imperfections.
The songs are about my life in the moment, as it happened, not written out and recorded over months and long after the moment had gone and the memory had passed. Like the hiss and hum, I used to try and avoid all that - now I embrace it as part of what music is all about, and I let it colour my work accordingly and accept it for what it is - even when it all drops out, breaks down and disappears.
The album is named after the speed at which the tape runs trough my reel to reel machine - 3 & 3/4 inches per second.
